The South Florida Bulls are prepared to play the underdog in Week 1 of this FBS season. Boise State is the first opponent, still the Mountain West's best program, as it comes off a playoff year. Boise finished its last campaign by battling with Penn State on New Year's Eve, while USF won the humble Hawaii Bowl.

USF's got one not-so-small advantage, however, in today's game set for 5:30 p.m. EST. The Bulls are hosting the contest at Raymond James Stadium, not traveling to play on Boise State's iconic blue surface. With a typical Florida summer bearing down on Tampa, the Bulls will be more used to the conditions.

That factor, along with USF quarterback Byrum Brown's return from a long-term injury, is helping to keep South Florida's point spread from stretching to more than a touchdown against QB Maddux Madsen and the Boise blue.

Spread

  • Bulls +9.5 (-110)

  • Totals have gone OVER in six of USF's last seven games.

Boise State Broncos at South Florida Bulls Predictions and Picks

Brown and running back Cartevious Norton should make a handy read-option combo for the USF offense this year, but the Bulls' main concern is their defense, ranked 118th in the nation in 2024. With a solid LB group and veterans in the defensive backfield, it's fair to call the unit an underachieving one at present.

Meanwhile, the Boise State Broncos are taking extraordinary steps to prepare for Tampa's weather. John Wustrow of the Idaho Press reports that the Broncos have used heaters to create "inferno practices," while manufacturing sudden delays in the Broncos' practice schedule to simulate a potential lightning delay.

Today's consensus over/under (O/U) forecast of 63.5 total points is as inflated as the field-temperature forecast, and probably not as accurate. The more successful Boise State is at controlling the ball with the ground game, the better the Broncos' pass rush will fare against USF's blocking. Pick the under-total-points bet today.
